A new reality for meetings

For years, the tech industry has tried to lead us into adopting video-calling more fully; as it turns out, we just needed everyone confined to their own homes for an extended period.

I’ve been doing something I had never considered before. I make myself presentable for video conferences. Usually, I’d just avoid turning on the video, because I find it rather pointless. Most of the time, you’d see the top of my head as I look down to make notes. But nowadays, being video-ready shows foresight.

Then there’s still the awkward reality of video conferencing that we never see in movies: the lack of eye contact. Considering that humans can detect within a few pixels whether someone is looking at them, this is not a small deal.
