Jack of all trades

Salesman, developer, information worker manager, consultant. Can one person do it all?

02 December 2009

To the casual observer, the software industry is comprised of some large US-based vendors, with a couple of others in Europe. Microsoft, IBM, SAP, Oracle - that lot. But the vast majority of software is not written for distribution or as a packaged product but to solve a customer’s specific problem. And it’s coded in-house or by a company like nVisionIT.

Founded in 2000, nVision now employs over 50 people, including Piers Matthews, the head of its Information Worker division. Matthews is a self-described jack of all trades and following him around for a day gives a pretty good impression of the challenges faced by customised software developers in this country.
