The industry`s favourite coffee shop

Ambiance and the X-factor gives training some torque.

07 July 2002

“I always compare us to a restaurant,” says Gary Chalmers. He has been asked to explain to a sceptical journalist his reference to the “X factor”, a certain “indefinable vibe” that motivates clients to train with Torque IT. Is this X factor any different from the fuzzy dot com era stuff that was meant to be the reason for being there, but quickly got hijacked by ambitious CEOs who needed maximum sleep-under-the-desk-style productivity from minimum headcount to satisfy analysts` growth expectations? Is it just culture? Does it even exist?

This analogy is probably more apt than even Chalmers perceives it to be. The company, with its large list of clients, big and small, is a veritable hub of information; a place where people end up not only learning, but talking and exchanging news, views and gossip. And, unlike in a gym, all the gossip revolves around the still-fascinating technology business.
